An engine is only as valuable to a lessor as the range of operators and jurisdictions it can legally serve. Certification status governs where a leased engine can fly, which airlines can accept it, and how quickly it can be redeployed to a new operator once a lease ends. This makes regulatory alignment a foundational, rather than incidental, consideration across the global regulatory landscape shaping the market, influencing everything from initial deal structuring to eventual remarketing.
Two regulatory bodies dominate this landscape: the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, known as EASA, and the United States Federal Aviation Administration, known as the FAA. An engine's certification status under each determines which operators, in which jurisdictions, can legally accept it under lease.
For fleet planning heads and compliance officers structuring cross-border deals, certification status is not a one-time check performed at lease signing. It is an ongoing condition that must be maintained throughout the lease term, tracked through continuing airworthiness documentation, and verified again at every subsequent handover as the engine moves between operators over its working life.
EASA certification governs engine airworthiness across the European Union and a wider group of countries that recognize EASA standards directly. An EASA-compliant engine asset has been certified to meet EASA's airworthiness requirements, covering everything from initial type design approval through the ongoing maintenance and modification standards that keep the engine airworthy over its operational life.
For lessors, maintaining EASA compliance on an engine asset preserves access to the full European operator base, along with several other jurisdictions that mirror EASA standards in their own national aviation regulations. Losing EASA compliance, even temporarily, can immediately disqualify an engine from a large segment of the potential lessee pool, which is why lessors monitor compliance status as closely as they monitor an engine's physical maintenance condition.
EASA's continuing airworthiness framework also governs how modifications and repairs are approved throughout an engine's life, meaning any maintenance work performed outside EASA-approved organizations or procedures can jeopardize the asset's certification status. Lessors placing engines with European operators typically require maintenance to be performed at EASA-approved facilities specifically to avoid this risk.
FAA certification serves the equivalent function for the United States and jurisdictions that recognize FAA airworthiness standards. An FAA-certified engine portfolio has met the FAA's type certification and continuing airworthiness requirements, opening access to the large population of US-based and US-aligned operators.
Because the United States represents one of the largest single-country aviation markets globally, FAA certification is effectively a prerequisite for any lessor seeking to serve major US carriers, and many lessors structure their portfolio maintenance programs around satisfying both FAA and EASA standards simultaneously rather than choosing one over the other.
FAA continuing airworthiness requirements, like their EASA counterparts, extend well beyond the point of initial certification. Airworthiness directives, mandatory service bulletins, and approved maintenance procedures all fall under ongoing FAA oversight, and a lessor's ability to demonstrate unbroken compliance documentation is frequently a condition of both the lease agreement itself and any structured financing built on top of it.
Dual-certified engines, meeting both EASA and FAA airworthiness requirements simultaneously, represent the most flexible and liquid category of leasing asset, since they can be placed with operators in either regulatory regime without additional certification work at the point of lease. Many of the structured finance and ABS-backed engine assets that back institutional financing vehicles are built specifically around dual-certified portfolios, since broader regulatory acceptance directly supports stronger collateral value.
Achieving and maintaining dual certification requires meeting the more stringent of the two regimes' requirements wherever they diverge, along with parallel documentation and continuing airworthiness tracking for both authorities. This adds administrative overhead relative to single-certification assets, but the payoff is a materially larger addressable lessee base and typically stronger residual value support in the secondary market.
Independent and diversified lessors operating across multiple continents rely especially heavily on dual-certified portfolios, since a single engine may move between a European operator, a North American operator, and an Asia-Pacific operator across successive lease terms over its working life. Maintaining dual certification from the outset avoids the delay and cost of certifying an engine for a new regime each time it changes hands.

When a directive applies to a leased engine, compliance becomes a shared responsibility between the lessor, who owns the asset, and the operator, who is flying it, and lease agreements typically specify in detail who bears the cost and scheduling burden of compliance work. This is a leading trigger for engine overhaul bridging during shop visits, since a directive can pull an engine into an unscheduled shop visit well ahead of its normal maintenance interval.
A directive issued mid-lease can materially affect both parties' economics. The lessor's asset may need unplanned maintenance investment to remain compliant and marketable, while the operator faces potential downtime if the required work cannot be completed on the original maintenance schedule. Well-structured leases anticipate this by allocating AD compliance costs and scheduling responsibility clearly at signing, rather than leaving it to be negotiated after a directive is issued.
Analyst commentary. Regulatory risk in engine leasing is rarely about a single directive in isolation. It compounds across a portfolio: a lessor holding many units of the same engine type faces correlated exposure if a directive affects that entire type, while a diversified portfolio spreads this risk across multiple engine families.
